DBT Skills Session
DBT Skills Sessions are a structured, educational approach to learning the four core skill sets of Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.
This is for people who want to build concrete skills for managing emotions and navigating life’s challenges, whether or not they’re currently in therapy.
-
DBT Skills Sessions focus on teaching practical tools you can use in your daily life. Unlike traditional talk therapy, skills sessions are educational and action-oriented. You’ll learn specific techniques and practice applying them to real situations.
-
Mindfulness: Learning to be present in the moment without judgment, observing your thoughts and emotions without getting overwhelmed by them.
Distress Tolerance: Getting through crisis moments and intense emotions without making things worse. Skills for surviving difficult situations when you can’t change them right away.
Emotion Regulation: Understanding your emotions, reducing emotional vulnerability, and changing unwanted emotional responses.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Asking for what you need, saying no, and navigating relationships while maintaining self-respect and connection with others. -
DBT Skills Sessions are designed for people who:
• Want to learn concrete tools for managing emotions
• Are struggling with intense feelings but may not need comprehensive therapy
• Are already in therapy elsewhere and want to add DBT skills
• Have completed DBT before and want a refresher -
Individual Therapy focuses on processing emotions, exploring patterns, and working through personal challenges in depth. It’s more open-ended and tailored to your unique needs.
DBT Skills Sessions are structured and skills-focused. We work through the four modules systematically, learning and practicing specific techniques. They’re more educational than exploratory.
You can do skills sessions on their own, or combine them with individual therapy (with me or another provider).
-
We’ll work through the four DBT skill modules in order, typically spending several sessions on each module. You’ll practice skills between sessions and track your progress. DBT is about building skills you actually use, not just learning concepts. We can adjust the pace based on what you need more time with or want to focus on.
